Nature vs. Nurture? Let’s Do The Math

 Esther Okade (age 10)

Esther Okade (age 10)

It’s so interesting (regarding enrollment in a distance learning college). It has the type of maths I love. It’s real maths — theories, complex numbers, all that type of stuff,” she giggles. “It was super easy. My mum taught me in a nice way. I want to (finish the course) in two years. Then I’m going to do my PhD in financial maths when I’m 13. I want to have my own bank by the time I’m 15 because I like numbers and I like people and banking is a great way to help people. ~Esther Okade,

For now we want her to enjoy her childhood as well as her maths. By the time she was four I had taught her the alphabet, her numbers, and how to add, subtract, multiply and division. ‘I saw that she loved patterns so developed a way of using that to teach her new things. I thought I would try her with algebra, and she loved it more than anything. She wants to be a millionaire. ~Mrs. Omonefe Okada (Esther’s mother)

Just So Happy: Esther (left) is pictured last year with her mother Omonefe (right) after passing her A-level in maths. Congratulations, Esther!

Ruby Bridges Speaks at Baton Rouge, LA Elementary School

Thank you, Ruby Bridges!

Thank you, Ruby Bridges!

Ruby Bridges came to speak at our school(St. Helena Arts and Technology Academy) today in St. Helena Parish, LA. If you don’t know who she is, she helped integrate the South by being the first black student to attend an all white elementary school in New Orleans, LA in 1960. She was a first grader just like the kids I teach.

Loved hearing the event from her point of view. How she didn’t understand the hatred. She just wanted a friend. She didn’t care how they looked. All the kids were so quiet. Listening. I have never seen a gym full of kids so attentive. These are our signed books! #IAMMOTIVATION
